Panic gripped a private hospital in Pune’s Hadapsar area on Wednesday evening after a suspicious object containing low-grade explosives was discovered inside the premises, triggering a major security response and a joint investigation by the police, ATS and crime branch officials.

The device, found near a washroom inside the Ushakiran Hospital, was later defused safely by the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS). Officials said the incident is being treated seriously due to the presence of patients, doctors and visitors inside the building at the time the object was spotted.

According to the police, a doctor first noticed the suspicious item, which reportedly had a digital clock-like attachment, and alerted the police control room. Senior Pune Police officials rushed to the hospital soon after, while the premises were searched thoroughly as part of precautionary measures.

Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said the device was shifted to an open ground at the gliding centre after following standard bomb disposal protocols.

“Around 8 pm today, we got some information that there was a bomb like device found on the hospital premises. The police team, along with the bomb disposal squad, immediately reached the spot. The bomb disposal squad carried this device after following due mandated protocols and took it to an open ground at the gliding centre. The bomb was successfully defused,” Kumar told reporters on Wednesday.

He praised the BDDS team for handling the situation swiftly and said multiple agencies have now been deployed to investigate the matter.

“The Pune City Police, local police station, as well as the crime branch and the ATS teams, are jointly investigating… We are investigating the case from all possible angles. ATS is involved,” he added.

NCP MLA Chetan Vitthal Tupe described the object as a “live explosive device” and said a serious mishap could have occurred had it detonated inside the hospital.

“A bomb had been planted inside the hospital, which has now been successfully defused through the joint efforts of the police and the bomb squad. There is currently no cause for alarm,” the MLA told ANI.

He said the hospital premises and nearby areas have been completely scanned and declared safe for now.

“However, it was indeed a live explosive device. Had any mishap occurred, the consequences could have been severe, given the large number of people present inside the hospital and in the immediate vicinity,” he said.

Tupe also claimed that investigators are examining eyewitness accounts linked to a suspicious vehicle seen near the spot earlier in the day.

According to the MLA, eyewitnesses alleged that a man stepped out of a vehicle, believed to be a rental car, near the hospital before leaving the area shortly afterwards.

“The police and the administration have initiated an investigation into the incident, which involves a review of CCTV footage,” he said, adding that some individuals have come under suspicion, though no identity has been confirmed yet.

He further said hospital staff, including doctors and employees, are expected to be questioned as part of the probe.

“Police investigation will certainly explore every angle, including the possibility of a terrorist attack, though it would be inappropriate to confirm or deny such a scenario until the inquiry is complete,” Tupe said.
